Kathryn has been offering this annual externship to Whitworth University and the EWNIEFT community now for the 6th year.  Kathryn is a marriage and Family Therapist in California\, and is a Certified EFT Trainer and Supervisor with the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy.\nHaving grown up in South Africa\, she returns frequently to teach and train in her birth-home country. Kathryn is the founder of the EFT South Africa Community. Now as an American citizen\, she has a full-time private practice in San Diego\, CA\, where she works with children\, couples and families. Kathryn teaches Play Therapy at the University of California San Diego\, in the Play Therapy Program\, and practicum at Bethel University. She serves as clinical supervisor to the Alliant Couple and Family Clinic. For more information on Kathryn\, visit her online at http://www.kathryndebruin.com\n\nOverview of the Externship\nEmotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is the leading form of more effective marital therapy treatments. EFT is a short-term (8-20 sessions) structured approach to couples therapy. There is a substantial body of research outlining the effectiveness of EFT. Research studies find that 70-75% of couples move from marital distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. There is also research on the change process and predictors of success. A segment on EFT for individuals will also be included. \nEFT is based on a clear\, explicit attachment conceptualization of marital distress and adult love. These conceptualizations are supported by empirical research on the nature of marital distress and adult attachment. EFT is collaborative and respectful of clients. Change strategies and interventions are specific and clear\, and key moves and moments in the change process have been mapped into nine steps and three stages of change. \nThe goals of EFT are to: 1) expand and re-organize key emotional responses; 2) create a shift in partner’s interactional positions and initiate new cycles of interaction; and 3) foster the creation of a secure bond between partners. \nThis 4-day beginning externship is designed to help therapists have an immersive didactic and experiential conceptualization of the EFT model. There will be lecture\, role plays\, handouts\, group interactions and demonstrations with a live couple\, to help the participant understand and be able to apply the principles of EFT in their own practice of couple therapy upon completion of this externship. \n\nSpecific Learning Objectives for each day of the externship: \nDay 1: Introduction to Attachment Theory & the Process of EFT \n1. Outline attachment science as a guide to psychotherapy ― EFIT\, EFCT\, EFFT. \n2. Describe the nature and causes of relationship distress. \n3. She serves as clinical supervisor to the Alliant Couple and Family Clinic. For more information on Kathryn\, visit her online at http://www.kathryndebruin.com \n\nOverview of the Externship\nEmotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is the leading form of more effective marital therapy treatments. \n\nOver All Learning Objectives: \n\n\n\nDemonstrate a thorough knowledge of the EFT model for couples\nConceptualize couple distress based on the EFT model\, including attachment theory and primary emotions.\nDevelop skills in helping partners reprocess the emotional responses or patterns that maintain relational distress and disconnection.\nDevelop skills in helping partners shape new interaction patterns and bonding events.\n\n\n\n\nSpecific Learning Objectives for each day of the externship: \nDay 1: Introduction to Attachment Theory & the Process of EFT \n1. (pending approval process) \n\nGetting grounded with the EFT Tango\nAbstract \nGetting Grounded in the EFT Tango is a one day course designed to help participants develop familiarity and skill in using the EFT Tango in their clinical work. With the EFT Tango we can be more oriented and confident in knowing how to balance process and cycle work with emotional access and deepening. By providing simple guideposts for the clinician to ground ourselves\, then we are freed up to use more of ourselves in attunement and resonance. \n\nDescription \nTraditionally we have taught Emotion Focused Therapy for couples as a model of steps and stages. For some people the steps and the stages are the comforting map of EFT\, but for others the steps and the stages can be a real stumbling block that slows down the learning and fills people with insecurity. In Sue Johnson’s most recent book\, she is uses the EFT Tango to illustrate how we can move through individual\, couple and family sessions moving easily from systemic work into emotional deepening and back into integration. We still use the steps and \nstages to guide us in our work\, but the EFT Tango can help us orient ourselves throughout the session regardless of step or stage. \nThis workshop is designed to give the clinician a firm grasp of using the EFT Tango. We will observe\, practice\, and experience the EFT Tango over and over again. We will watch sessions and break down the moves one at a time. We will develop simple hand holds that you can use in your session to help you feel oriented\, confident and in charge of your sessions. We will practice each move of the tango and share the learning in small groups. This workshop will be lively and experiential. \n\nCourse Goals and Objectives \n\nDefine the EFT Tango and each of its moves.\nConceptualize clinicians interventions in a session through the lens of the EFT Tango.\nApply different moves of the EFT Tango to different struggles in couple therapy.\nUse systemic skills to clarify a dynamic (Move 1) before dropping anchor (move 2)\nUse a balance of emotional deepening skills in combination with increasing awareness skills to help clients expand emotional capacity while increasing awareness.\nUse the EFT Tango to orient at moments of confusion and overwhelm or escalation.\n\n\nSchedule \n8:30-9:00 Registration \n9-930 Introduction\, didactic \n930-1100 tape review and teaching \n11-1215 move 1 teaching and experiential \n1215-115 lunch \n115-130 processing\, discussion and questions \n130-3 move 1 and working with reactivity \nmove 1 into 2\, finding the stake experiential \n3-430 stage one versus stage two and experiential \n430-455 questions and integration \n\nMeet Our Master Class Presenter\n\n \nDr. Sharon Chatkupt Lee\, PsyD is a psychologist and an EFT Supervisor and ICEEFT Trainer with a full time practice in Portland\, Oregon. \nSharon has been studying EFT since 2006 and began to build the EFT community in Portland and surrounding areas in 2012. \nDr. Lee is the Director of the Portland Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy www.pceft.com and a founding member of the Oregon Community of Emotionally Focused Therapists. \nSharon has special interests in supervision issues\, trauma and yoga therapy. www.drsharonlee.com.
