The Eastern Washington/Northern Idaho EFT (EWNIEFT) Community along with Whitworth University is proud to co-sponsor another EFT Externship for the 6th consecutive year!

The EFT Externship focuses on how to effectively work with and use emotional processing from an adult attachment perspective, specifically within the emotionally focused couple (EFCT) and individual therapy (EFIT) model.  EFT, using an attachment perspective, is an empirically validated and richly researched model designed by Dr. Sue Johnson. Dr Johnson is the founder and director of the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT), and this externship is an official event authorized by her organization.

Overview of the Externship

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is the leading form of more effective marital therapy treatments. EFT is a short-term (8-20 sessions) structured approach to couples therapy. There is a substantial body of research outlining the effectiveness of EFT. Research studies find that 70-75% of couples move from marital distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. There is also research on the change process and predictors of success. A segment on EFT for individuals will also be included.

EFT is based on a clear, explicit attachment conceptualization of marital distress and adult love. These conceptualizations are supported by empirical research on the nature of marital distress and adult attachment. EFT is collaborative and respectful of clients. Change strategies and interventions are specific and clear, and key moves and moments in the change process have been mapped into nine steps and three stages of change.

The goals of EFT are to: 1) expand and re-organize key emotional responses; 2) create a shift in partner’s interactional positions and initiate new cycles of interaction; and 3) foster the creation of a secure bond between partners.

This 4-day beginning externship is designed to help therapists have an immersive didactic and experiential conceptualization of the EFT model. There will be lecture, role plays, handouts, group interactions and demonstrations with a live couple, to help the participant understand and be able to apply the principles of EFT in their own practice of couple therapy upon completion of this externship.
